Hundreds of Namibians domiciled in Zambia thronged the High Commission in Lusaka for the belated Independence celebrations.

The event was organised by the Namibian High Commission in Zambia.

These are Namibians who are in Zambia for various reasons other than business and education.

The Namibian Defence Force's cricket team that is in the country also joined in.

Various cultural groups from mainly the student population performed at the event just before the national cake was shared.

Several speeches were also delivered at the event.

Namibian Police Attaché to Zambia, Petrus Amadhila, said:

"This day reminds us of the resilience, courage and determination of those who fought for Namibia's independence, and it gives us an opportunity to reflect on how far our nation has come."

Namibia's High Commissioner to Zambia, Goms Menette, said the event pays tribute to brave men and women who gave their lives for Namibia's freedom.

"The patriotism and bravery, determination and selfless sacrifices remain unmatched," he said.

Menette also related the history justifying the importance of having independence celebrations in Zambia.

"Many of you may not know that during the early 70s to the 80s, Zambia was home to Swapo freedom fighters and other Namibians who had left their motherland escaping brutal oppression and the South African military arrests.

"The presence of Swapo liberation movements and others did not sit well with the oppressor, who retaliated by carrying out military attacks on Zambia, which did not only victimise the Swapo military fighters but also killed innocent Zambian civilians," he said.

Some students recited poems, extolling the Land of the Brave.

The atmosphere was generally that of a home away from home as attendees danced their foreign tag out on the Namibian soil.
