Botswana has launched a 500MW solar photovoltaic plant alongside a 500MWh battery energy storage system in the Ngamiland District. This project aims to reduce dependence on electricity imports and position Botswana as a net electricity exporter by 2030.
President Duma Boko highlighted the project's strategic importance:
“We are focusing on accelerating implementation of an Integrated Resource Plan and deliver 1.5GW of renewable energy by 2030. This will bring to light our broader ambition of being a regional hub for solar energy generation.”
The plant will be developed under an Independent Power Producer model by Okavango Solar Limited. Botswana Power Corporation CEO David Kgoboko said:
“This project will significantly enhance security of supply, reduce our carbon footprint, optimize the corporation's generation costs through the displacement of expensive power imports and position Botswana as a net-exporter of electricity in the region.”
Statistics show that Eskom supplied about 59.7% of Botswana’s electricity imports in early 2024, followed by Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation and Namibia Power Corporation. This solar project is expected to be commissioned by 2029, reducing reliance on external suppliers and supporting Botswana’s sustainable energy goals.
