Hardap Governor Riaan McNab expressed concern over the inadequate housing and living conditions many elderly citizens endure despite their significant contributions to nation-building. He made these remarks during a handover ceremony of corrugated iron sheet houses to two pensioners, Rebekka Boois and Willemina Kagamibia, at Gibeon.
“A society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable. Our elderly citizens carry wisdom, history and the values that shape who we are today. It is therefore not an act of charity to care for them but it’s our responsibility. It is our responsibility that we must ensure they live in safety, comfort and dignity,” said Governor McNab.
Village Council Chairperson Ellerien Isaaks expressed hope that the new homes bring peace and warmth to the beneficiaries, adding, “May these houses bring you peace, warmth. You have contributed to this community, you have contributed to this village. We don't know what you went through in the past, but your tremendous handouts might be in the liberation struggle of this country; we don't know.”
Beneficiary Willemina Kagamibia shared her gratitude: “I have not dreamed of this day, it just happened. I was looking around wondering where help would come from as it was raining. My house was always wet. I had to make sure while it rained that the pillows and other items were not wet. I am really grateful.”
Rebecca Boois also expressed happiness at the donation. The Governor’s office provided the corrugated sheets and food donations, while the village council ensured electricity supply for the new homes.
