A 24-year-old woman was denied bail in the Outapi Magistrate's Court today after facing two counts of attempted murder.

Theresia Johannes is accused of throwing her 9-month-old twin children, a boy and a girl, into a water pond at Omutundungu Village in the Omusati Region on Saturday with the intention of killing them.

The twins were rescued by a cattle herder who witnessed the incident and intervened.

During her first court appearance, Johannes broke down in tears and appeared unwell.

She told the court she would conduct her own defence.

The case was postponed to the 3rd of September for further investigation.

Following the incident, Omusati Regional Police Commander Commissioner Ismael Basson has appealed to members of the public to seek counselling when they feel emotionally burdened.

Basson urged the public not to take out their anger on children, warning that such actions often lead to tragic outcomes and have long-term effects on both perpetrators and victims.

He added that families and partners should provide the necessary psychological support to those who need it to help prevent similar incidents.

To make it worse, investigations say the woman and boyfriend stay together and it was a small misunderstanding. We don't know how far it comes from. It's just a suspicion of the boyfriend seeing another girlfriend. It's very disappointing and discouraging, and we must all, as a nation, fight and ensure that if there are problems in the relationship, there must be help somewhere. We have to start talking and looking for help. Everyone has problems, but we must find solutions out there; we just need to find them."
