Both the Zambian cabinet and parliament were dissolved last Friday in line with the country's constitution in readiness for the August general election.

This is in accordance with the national constitution, which requires automatic dissolution 90 days prior to a general election.

The upcoming general elections are scheduled to take place on August 13, 2026.

The final full sitting of President Hakainde Hichilema's first-term Cabinet took place on Thursday, with dissolution occurring the following day.

Only the president and vice president remain in office to conduct the executive affairs of the state during the electoral period.

All government ministers have ceased to hold office to ensure a fair and level playing field during the campaign period.

Following the dissolution of the National Assembly, the country enters a full electoral cycle.

Presidential candidates' nominations of about 30 candidates who have so far paid an equivalent of 100 thousand Namibian dollars each began on Monday and are expected to run for a week.

Thereafter, candidate nominations for parliamentary and local government positions will commence, leading up to election day.
