The establishment of a new secondary school is officially scheduled to start in Grootfontien to alleviate the issue of overcrowded classrooms.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Regional Education Director Gerhard Ndafenongo stated that upon its completion in 2027, the school will be named in honour of former governor of Otjozondjupa and Omaheke regions, Raphama Kamehozu.
The school will comprise 26 classrooms of grades 8 to 12 and will boast a science lab and library for a population of 1040 learners.
"We are happy, and we are investing, and we know this investing will pay some returns into our society, considering the status quo and academic excellence in Grootfontein. Here in Grootfontein, there are 3 schools that have huge numbers, and it's for that reason the ministry is trying to address that through what we call a 'decongestion plan', explained Education Director for Otjozondjupa, Gerhard Ndafenongo.
Ndafengo added that in the current academic year, over 1000 learners could not secure space and are in a platoon system at the town.
Governor of Otjozondjupa Region John ||Khamuseb adds, "Today's gathering signifies far more than a handover of a construction site or a ceremonial groundbreaking. Instead it symbolises the progress, hope and our unwavering collective commitment to advance education and empower the youth of Grootfontein and the broader youth of the Otjozondjupa Region."
A family representative of the late Kamehozu, Veueza Kasiringua, welcomed the school being named after him.
"We are profoundly moved by this state initiative to honour the enduring legacy of the late honourable Kamehozu through the construction of the new secondary school. This brings a historical circle. Grootfontien holds a sacred place in our family history. It is his birthplace, the very community where he grew up, received his education and took his first steps into his public journey until he was laid to rest in this beautiful town."
