The African Development Bank Group (AfDBG) has received strong backing from governments, investors, and development partners for its new platform solutions approach aimed at accelerating transformation in Africa's health and aviation sectors.
At its 2026 annual meetings in Brazzaville, the bank presented two flagship initiatives: the Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme and the African Medical Equipment and Medicines Facility.
The platforms are designed to mobilise capital, reduce investment risks and address critical development challenges across the continent.
AfDB President Dr Sidi Ould Tah said the initiatives will help strengthen regional integration, improve access to quality medicines, and support implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The Integrated Aviation Transformation Program aims to mobilise $7 billion over the next five years for fleet modernisation, airport infrastructure, and improved air connectivity.
Japan also announced a 10 million US dollar contribution to the programme's Risk-Sharing Facility to help lower financing risks for African airlines.
Meanwhile, the African Medical Equipment and Medicines Facility seeks to improve access to medicines, vaccines, and medical equipment through more coordinated and sustainable procurement systems.
Only 40% of essential medicines are available on time, while access delays can range from three to nine months.
African ministers and partners praised the bank's ability to turn continental priorities into bankable programmes while emphasising the need for strong partnerships, effective risk mitigation, and rapid implementation.
