Malawian government has cancelled state-funded Independence Day celebrations for 6 July 2026 and dedicated the day to national prayer and thanksgiving.
The Malawian authorities also cited the need to direct scarce public resources toward economic recovery and essential services among the reasons for the cancellations.
In a press statement issued by the Office of the President and Cabinet, Chief Secretary Dr. Justin Saidi said President Arthur Peter Mutharika had directed that there would be no government-funded Independence Day events this year.
“The Office of the President and Cabinet wishes to inform the general public that, in keeping with the government's commitment to fiscal discipline, prudent management of public resources, and the austerity measures currently being implemented across the public sector, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, has directed that there shall be no government-funded Independence Day celebrations this year,” said Saidi.
He added that Malawians should still mark Independence Day through reflection, prayer and a commitment to national values.
“While there will be no official celebrations, His Excellency the President has dedicated this year's Independence Day commemoration to a National Thanksgiving and Supplication Programme," said Saidi.
The prayer programme will focus on peace, unity, national leadership, agricultural success, protection from adverse weather conditions and the country's economic reform agenda.
“The administration is determined to restore economic stability, strengthen public finances, and lay a solid foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity,” said Saidi.
