The mayor of Ongwediva, Naemi Amuthenu, has been elected president of the Association of Local Authorities in Namibia, deputised by Gobabis mayor, Elvin Gariseb.
The election took place at the association's congress held at Walvis Bay.
Amuthenu and Gariseb succeed Samuel !Oë-Amseb and Hilda Jesaya, respectively.
Addressing delegates, Amuthenu said local authorities remain at the forefront of service delivery and community development, describing councillors as the level of government closest to the people.
She highlighted the significance of her election for women in leadership, saying it reflects progress being made in creating opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully at all levels of governance.
"As the president of ALAN, I will commit myself to being an advocate, the strongest one, for the interest in the welfare of all the councillors. The strength of ALAN lies in the unity of all councillors irrespective of their political elation. Among the key issues that remain high on our agenda is continued strengthening and full recognition of ALAN, and I will make it happen."
She expressed hope that her election would inspire more women, particularly young women, to participate in public life and pursue leadership positions with confidence.
Amuthenu stressed that Namibia stands to benefit when leadership reflects the talents, experiences and perspectives of all its people.
