The Association of SWA Disadvantaged Veterans will hold a meeting in Windhoek next Saturday to discuss various issues, including a possible court challenge against the Veterans Act.
The Namibia Veterans Act of 2008 outlines the responsibilities of the minister responsible for Veteran Affairs and establishes the Veterans Fund to provide assistance to veterans and their dependants.
Speaking at a media briefing in Windhoek, the association's president, Elias Kambariua, said former members of the South West African Territorial Force (SWATF) and their families have faced challenges since Namibia's independence.
The association said it was established to unite former SWATF soldiers and address issues affecting them and their families.
As part of these efforts, it will hold a meeting in Windhoek next Saturday.
President of the Association of SWA Disadvantaged Veterans, Elias Kambariua, says, "Today we are here as former soldiers who served in SWATF before the independence of our country, now united as the Association of SWA Disadvantaged Veterans. On this particular day we are going to elaborate on several matters concerning our suffering, rejection, and discrimination against us for the past 36 years and what measures we must take going forward. We urge all former soldiers and their beneficiaries to be present. Our future, and the future of our departed brothers, including their bereaved families and widows, are in our hands."
The association has called on former soldiers and families of deceased veterans to unite in addressing these challenges, saying it will continue engaging stakeholders to improve the welfare of its members.
