The Kavango East sports community is mourning the passing of Christine Simasiku Kavola, a prominent sports administrator and educator whose dedicated service significantly advanced school sports and netball development across the region.
Kavola, who served as the Secretary of the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) and as a teacher at Rudolf Ngondo Primary School, is being remembered by colleagues and athletes as an exceptional mentor, leader, and mother figure.
Kavango East Regional Sport Officer Someno Erastus stated that Kavola's commitment to young athletes extended far beyond the sports field, describing her as a selfless individual who consistently prioritized the needs of others.
"This loss has hit our office incredibly hard. Christine Simasiku Kavola gave everything to sport," Erastus said. "Whenever our sports programmes struggled to feed the players, we could knock on her door, and she would readily share whatever she had in her kitchen. She never hesitated, and she was always the first to accommodate visiting female netball players at her home."
Erastus emphasized that her legacy remains vibrant through the ongoing success of regional netball, noting that Kavola laid the foundational framework for the current Kavango East team, which recently achieved back-to-back victories in the Newspaper Cup. Many of those athletes camped at her residence during their development and training periods.
Former Ntunguru FC Chairperson Chrisantius Mashika echoed these sentiments, describing her passing as a massive blow to the entire sporting fraternity. He highlighted her recent involvement with the Kavango East Under-20 regional team, which recently celebrated a tournament victory.
"She was an icon and a mother figure in sport, involved in almost every activity. To suddenly hear that she is no more is deeply painful," Mashika said. "While we understand that death is a part of life, this remains a tremendous loss, not only for Kavango East but for Namibia as a whole."
Mashika called on the sports fraternity to stand together in solidarity and offer maximum support to the bereaved family during this challenging period.
As tributes continue to pour in, members of the sporting community are rallying around her family while reflecting on her enduring contributions to the growth of school sports and netball development in Kavango East.
