The African Union has called for stronger regional cooperation to improve labour mobility, recognising workers' skills across borders and better matching labour supply with market demand to support economic integration.

The recommendations are contained in the fourth edition of the Labour Migration Statistics Report in Africa.

It urged regional economic communities to establish regional skills recognition mechanisms and strengthen labour market information systems to map the skills of migrant workers across the continent.

The report stated that harmonising labour migration policies and improving cross-border recognition of qualifications will help address skills shortages, create employment opportunities and advance Africa's integration agenda under Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area.

It also called on the African Union to strengthen coordination among member states, mobilise resources and support the adoption of common standards for labour migration governance.

According to the report, improved regional cooperation and skills recognition will enable safer, more regular and productive labour mobility while supporting economic growth and sustainable development across Africa.
