The National Solidarity Committee with Cuba has joined the people of Namibia in commemorating the 102nd anniversary of the birth of the late Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, one of Namibia's liberation stalwarts.

The committee said that Toivo ya Toivo dedicated his life to Namibia's liberation struggle and international solidarity, particularly with the Cuban people.

Public Relations Coordinator of the National Solidarity Committee with Cuba, Umbi Karuaihe-Upi in a statement stated that the late freedom fighter's contribution towards Namibia's freedom is inseparable from his deep commitment to international solidarity and enduring friendship with the Cuban people.
She noted that the committee particularly honours Toivo ya Toivo for his role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and solidarity between Namibia and Cuba.

During his years of imprisonment on Robben Island, she said Toivo ya Toivo and other liberation fighters followed Cuba's support for national liberation struggles in Africa and its principled opposition to colonialism and imperialism.

He also developed a deep admiration for the Cuban Revolution and for Cuba's commitment to education, healthcare, and the advancement of its people.

After his release from prison and while serving as Secretary-General of the Swapo Party in exile, Toivo ya Toivo visited Cuba and witnessed firsthand the care provided by the Cuban people to Namibian children who had survived the Cassinga Massacre.

Toivo ya Toivo continued to give practical expression to this solidarity by founding the Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association in 1992 and serving as its president for years.

As a result of his longstanding commitment, he was awarded Cuba's Medal of Friendship (Medalla de la Amistad).

The committee said honouring his legacy today means continuing practical solidarity with Cuba, which is facing severe economic challenges.

The committee called on Namibians to support its campaign to mobilise humanitarian assistance for the Cuban people.
