One year after the fatal car crash in which 16 people, comprising police officers, correctional service officers, and two civilians, perished, family members and former colleagues gathered to remember them.

The accident happened last year on the 30th of August near Mariental.

Attendees first held a moment of silence at the accident scene on the B1 road before proceeding to the Ebenhaezer Lutheran Church, where the ceremony took place.

Senior Chief Correctional Officer of the Hardap Correctional Facility Edward Thaniseb explained.

“Though their journey on earth was suddenly cut short, their names and memories will forever remain engraved in our hearts. As we commemorate this painful anniversary, we remember. We also remember the survivors and stand in solidarity with the bereaved families who continue to carry the burden of this unimaginable loss.”

The Namibian Correctional Service Commander for  the Hardap and ||Kharas Regions, Deputy Commissioner Michael Tsuseb, offered words of encouragement to the families.

“We wish to assure you that your loved ones will not be forgotten. The names, lives, and contributions of our 12 colleagues will forever remain part of the history and legacy of the Namibia Correctional Service. We recognise that no words can take away the pain of your loss, nor can anything replace the loved ones you lost.”

Hardap Correctional Facility Officer-in-Charge Julius Nambundunga urged colleagues to continue supporting and caring for one another and reminded them that every officer is a valued member of a family and community.

“For our seniors there and junior officers, I wish to say the loss of a colleague is never easy. Let us continue to care for one another, support one another, and value each other. Behind every uniform is a human being. Behind every correctional officer is a family that waits for them to return home."
