Family and friends of the late freedom fighter, Helao Shityuwete, have reflected on his contribution to Namibia's liberation struggle and the personal memories that defined his life.

Among those in attendance were former President Nangolo Mbumba and his wife, Sustjie; veteran journalist Gwen Lister; Artistic Director and Lecturer Sandy Rudd; Advocate Bience Gawanas; Uutoni Nujoma; and Professor Peter Katjavivi.

Lister recalled their shared passion for news.

“I first came to know Halal as a journalist and later as a friend. I think we shared in common some things. We were both news junkies. I know Halal never missed the news. And I think we both also shared a love of the written word.”

Professor Peter Katjavivi reflected on Shityuwete's bravery during his imprisonment on Robben Island as well as fond memories of his 40-year marriage to Jane.

“And indeed, the partnership that developed between her and Jane. Through the illness, when her mobility became constrained, not only did Jane waver, but she continued to provide a very strong, solid pillar of support to our dear brother.”

Former Ombudswoman and Special Adviser on Africa for the United Nations, Advocate Bience Gawan!as said Shityuwete made immense sacrifices for Namibia.

“But I can promise this: I will continue to honour your legacy by striving to give my best, by serving with integrity, and by never taking for granted the freedom and independence that you and your generation secured for us.”

For those who knew him, Shityuwete's legacy is not only rooted in the liberation struggle.

He was remembered as a courageous freedom fighter, a journalist, a husband, and a friend with personal stories and lighter moments that continue to keep his memory alive.
