A member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economy and Industry, Public Administration and Planning, George Kambala, has called for more information on consumer credit and its impact on civil servants.

"Hopefully, we will be able to see data regarding the interest rates that civil servants employed by the state are currently experiencing. Are they benefiting from reduced consumer interest rates? If not, what are the reasons behind this? Additionally, why do we not have interest rate caps in place?"

Another member, Michael Mulunga, said lenders currently lack a common platform to verify whether a borrower has already taken loans from other institutions.

"Are the banks able to share data amongst themselves to determine if I approach Bank A for a loan while already having a loan from Bank B and whether my borrowing threshold has been exceeded?"

The Bankers Association of Namibia Chief Executive Officer Dantagos Jimmy said civil servants can, in some cases, access more favourable interest rates than ordinary consumers due to the stability and predictability of their income.
