The Rundu Trade Fair Gala dinner held over the weekend has raised more than N$1 million, the highest amount ever pledged to date.
Speaking on behalf of the head of state, Vice President Lucia Witbooi, asked the attendees to pledge that exact amount.
"I came here with the intention of raising over a million dollars; let’s make it happen. Why not? Let us ensure we have a successful evening where we contribute a significant amount. The Prime Minister and I cannot justify travelling here for just N$500,000. Absolutely not."
The vice president says trade fairs are a crucial platform for economic participation, which, when maximised, can improve livelihoods and contribute to economic development.
“Trade fairs should not only be used to showcase our products but should serve as platforms that generate business ideas and opportunities as well as networking platforms.”
Rundu Mayor Andreas Jikerwa commended the organisers.
“We are here to invest in opportunities, foster resilient partnerships and mobilise the resources necessary to deliver an exceptional trade platform that will empower our local vendors, small and medium enterprises and corporate leaders alike.”
The Kavango East Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka thanked attendees for the money raised and emphasised that development is the strongest when everyone works together.
“Government cannot do it alone. The private sector cannot do it alone; the community cannot do it alone. Our progress depends on the partnerships we build and the responsibility we are prepared to share.”
