The second edition of the Rooftop Lounge Sport Tournament is underway at Omulunga Stadium in Grootfontein, bringing together teams from several communities to compete in football, netball, and volleyball.
The multi-sport competition is attracting increased participation while providing clubs with valuable match preparation ahead of the new league season and creating a platform for emerging talent.
A total of 14 football teams, nine netball teams, and six volleyball teams have registered for the event. Participants have travelled from Grootfontein and surrounding areas, including Tsumeb, Kombat, and Rietfontein.
Sponsor Nathan Mathew highlighted that the initiative aims to unite communities and foster sportsmanship, with long-term plans to establish the tournament as an annual scouting ground for coaches.
To boost competitive interest, organisers have increased the total cash prize from N$ 50,000 to N$ 60,000, representing a significant investment in local sports development.
Participating clubs are using the platform to evaluate squads, integrate new players, and build match fitness. Chelsea Sports Club Chairman Charles Tsowaseb noted that the tournament is playing a vital role in their pre-season preparations, following the introduction of several new players to their squad.
Organisers are already planning for the future, with the tournament set to return to Grootfontein during the Easter weekend next year. Future editions aim to expand the event's local economic impact and further increase the prize money.
