President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has departed for Luanda to attend and co-chair the inaugural Bi-National Commission with Angola.
The two countries are looking to strengthen economic cooperation and turn their longstanding political and historical ties into opportunities that benefit the people of both countries..
The president received a colorful send-off, she will lead high-level engagements that are expected to focus on cooperation in defence and security, diplomacy, political affairs, and social and legal matters.
Speaking to NBC News at Hosea Kutako International Airport before the President's departure, spokesperson in the Presidency Jonas Mbambo said the visit comes at a time when countries need to strengthen partnerships in an ever changing global political and economic dynamic.
Mbambo stressed that Namibia and Angola share a history that goes beyond diplomatic relations, with Angola having played an important role in Namibia's liberation struggle.
With that chapter now behind, Mbambo explained, both countries must focus on the economic challenges facing their people.
Beyond government-to-government discussions, economic cooperation is also expected to feature prominently during the visit.
About 95 business people have expressed interest in participating in a business forum aimed at strengthening commercial relations and identifying opportunities for Namibian companies in Angola.
He said the government wants Namibian businesses to look beyond the domestic market and explore opportunities elsewhere on the continent.
The business forum is expected to provide a platform for Namibian companies to promote their products and services, establish contacts and explore areas where the two economies can complement each other.
However, the extent to which these engagements will translate into new business opportunities will depend on the agreements reached and how they are implemented.
