The Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Minister Sanet Steenkamp, has called on training institutions to ensure that programmes offered are aligned with skills needed for the labour market.

Dr Steenkamp said this in a speech read on her behalf by the Executive Director Erastus Haitengela at the 15th graduation of 210 students at the Okakarara Vocational Training Centre (OVTC).

As Namibia advances towards industrialisation agendas and opportunities in emerging sectors, Steenkamp says institutions must prepare graduates to meet technical, professional and safety standards that are crucial to the industries.

"While qualification provides an important foundation, continued professional development, specialised training and practical workplace experience remain essential for career advancement. I therefore encourage our graduate to regard today's achievement not only as a conclusion of their learning journey but also as the beginning of a lifelong commitment to acquiring knowledge and improving their complete competence."

Okakarara Constituency Councillor Uzeraije Tjaverua delivered a speech on behalf of Otjozondjupa Governor John Khamuseb.

"OVTC has served generations of Namibians since 1977; as it approaches 50 years of training, its continuing relevance depends on how well its programme prepares people for the work that needs to be done now and in the future. The centre's bridging and business incubation activities are particularly meaningful."

A graduate Modestus Alweendo expressed his gratitude.

"Despite the challenges and the pressure and the difficulties, we made it today. To our parents and our guardians, thank you for your sacrifices, your prayers, your encouragement, and your support that helped carry us throughout our academic journey. To our lecturers and instructors, thank you for your patience and for preparing us for a life beyond these walls."

The graduation was held under the theme 'Innovate, Create, Elevate' for the OVTC class of 2026.
