Residents of Omitara settlement in the Okorukambe Constituency have petitioned the Omaheke Regional Council for prepaid water meters, designated waste disposal sites and a reliable refuse collection system, among other service delivery concerns.

Reading the petition on behalf of the residents, community activist Shaun Gariseb said households were experiencing unpredictable water bills that did not accurately reflect their water consumption.

He said the situation placed unnecessary financial pressure on residents and made it difficult for households to plan their monthly budgets.

"This situation is particularly concerning for elderly residents and pensioners; many households in Omitara rely heavily on old-age pension income as their primary or only source of livelihood. Unpredictable and excessive water charges can therefore consume a significant portion of their limited monthly income, leaving less money available for essential needs such as food, medication, electricity and other household necessities."

Receiving the petition on behalf of the council, Settlement Accounting Officer Erica Tjiueza promised to refer the issues raised to the relevant authorities for further deliberation.
