The Rundu Town Council's Mayor's Cup has reached an unexpected extension, with outstanding matches forcing organisers to reschedule the final fixtures for this weekend at the Rundu Sports Stadium.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled to conclude on Sunday, 26 October 2026, could not be completed on time due to a high volume of remaining matches across the schedule.
Established to strengthen ties between the local community and the business sector through sport, the tournament successfully staged its third edition over the weekend. However, the fixture schedule proved too extensive to fit into the initial timeframe, necessitating the extension.
Rundu Town Mayor Andreas Jikerwa noted that the experience gained from hosting this year's edition will assist in refining future events. He emphasized the need to mobilize additional sponsorship from the business community to increase prize money and attract a broader range of sporting codes in subsequent editions.
In addition to football, organisers plan to expand future tournaments to include netball and volleyball to boost overall participation.
Mayoral Cup Organiser Daniel Kathumbi confirmed that the finals and official prize-giving ceremony had to be postponed from Sunday to allow the remaining preliminary matches to be concluded fairly.
The remaining fixtures will now be played at the Rundu Sports Stadium this weekend, culminating in the finals and awards ceremony to officially conclude the third edition of the Mayor's Cup.
