Young people have been urged to take an active role in governance and national development, with calls for them to move beyond being beneficiaries of policies to become partners in shaping decisions that affect their future.
Speaking at the Youth in Politics Summit in Windhoek, Zambian Members of Parliament Fingani Mbulo emphasised the importance of youth representation in decision-making structures, saying young people should be empowered to contribute meaningfully to democracy and development.
"Our young people must therefore be partners in development, not merely beneficiaries of it. Our futures must be built with young people, not simply announced to them. And as we gather under this theme, a common Namibian destiny, let us remember that common destiny requires a shared responsibility. Let us not wait for our leaders."
The Summit seeks to address the limited participation of young people in political decision-making, despite youth representing more than 70% of Namibia's population.
It provides a platform for young Namibians from diverse backgrounds to develop leadership and advocacy skills, engage with policymakers and mentors and collaborate on policy ideas and civil action strategies.
The summit's founder, Christ Shameulu, noted that bringing together policymakers and young people, including MPs from different countries, provides an opportunity for mentorship and encourages youth to recognise their potential to participate in leadership.
The Summit also seeks to equip young people with the skills, networks and platforms to influence change at community, regional and national levels.
