The Namibian Correctional Services is facing a number of High Court challenges filed by offenders across the country.

The matters before the High Court could cost the institution millions in taxpayers' money.

Desmond ‘Denny’ Doeseb, who is incarcerated at the Oluno Correctional Facility, has taken the line minister, Dr Albert Kawana, and the Chief of Corrections, Raphael Hamunyela, to court.

He claims to have been placed in prolonged solitary confinement which lasted for six months.

Doeseb, in his claim, states that the reason provided by the corrections officials was that his life was in danger.

The actions of the officers were malicious and damaged him emotionally and psychologically, he says.

Doeseb is suing for N$2 million.

Laurentius Skeyer, an offender housed in the Hardap Correctional Facility at Mariental, is also suing the Namibian Correctional Services, including its minister, for N$400 000.

Skeyer claims that he suffered torture and cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment at the hands of a senior employee of the Namibia Correctional Services.

The officer he claims assaulted him during a transfer to a different section.

In the court papers, he states that he suffered serious physical injuries and emotional trauma.
