Food security is possible in Namibia through local production, as long as farmers are offered the necessary financial and technical support.

This was the core message echoed during the World Food Day commemoration held at Uukwiyu wuushona village in the Oshana Region.

In a speech read on his behalf, Agriculture Minister Carl Schlettwein said there is a need for global solidarity and action to transform agri-food systems towards better resilience and sustainability.

According to a recent Food and Agriculture Organization report, the number of people who cannot afford a healthy diet has risen by nearly 112 million, to nearly 3.1 billion by 2020.

"Addressing hunger, malnutrition and poverty remains a high priority on the agenda of the government of the Republic of Namibia. Therefore, the national high-level policies, namely, the constitution, Vision 2030, and Harambee Prosperity Plan, clearly stipulate the government's resolve to eradicate hunger, malnutrition, and poverty in Namibia."

He urged farmers to adopt smart agricultural technologies and to reorientate towards producing a variety of nutritious foods in sufficient quantities.

Exhibitors who showcased their products applauded the ministry for affording them an opportunity to market their products.

The event was held under the theme 'Leave no one behind. Better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all'.
