Lawyers representing Jerry Ekandjo welcomed a decision to hold a Central Committee meeting to decide whether or not the veteran politician should be allowed to contest the Vice Presidential position at its elective congress next month.

This comes after Swapo Secretary-General Sophia Shaningwa called for a Special Central Committee this coming Friday.

Richard Metcalfe of Metcalfe Beukes Attorneys told nbc News that Ekandjo, as a disciplined politician, just wants the party to follow the Constitution and, as such, welcomes efforts to resolve the issue amicably.

Last month, Ekandjo threatened to take legal action over his exclusion from the list of candidates to contest the party's Vice-Presidency at the upcoming congress.

Political analysts say SWAPO's decision to have its Central Committee review the request of Jerry Ekandjo to be allowed to contest for the party's Vice Presidential position is the right move.

According to local political analysts Dr Ndumba Kamwanyah and Dr Hoze Riruako, the only way the ruling party can maintain its unity and ensure victory in the 2024 elections is to avoid unnecessary exclusion of persons who otherwise qualify for party activities and to respect its own Constitution.

However, the two were quick to point out that it could be too late for Ekandjo to pull off much support from the delegates because his campaign has been delayed as opposed to his competitors, who had ample time to campaign.

But Metcalfe is confident in Ekandjo as a reputable politician who enjoys support among the rank and file of the Swapo party and that no amount of delay would predispose him.
