The Swapo Party Youth League is calling on the government to do away with middlemen in the procurement of goods.

SPYL Secretary for Information and Mobilization Moses Shikerete says the 650-million dollar medical supplies tender is evidence that the system is prone to abuse by connected individuals.

Shikerete called for the cancellation of the medical supplies tender and to conduct a thorough review of the whole award process.

The SPYL says the government has personnel in each department to handle procurement without involving intermediaries.

Shikerete also called on the minister of finance to summon the board with immediate effect as the youth wing maintains that through this tender they have demonstrated that they are not having the national interest at heart.

The Youth League believes the middleman type of procurement process is draining public coffers and as the youth, they can no longer sit back and watch.

The SPYL wants a review of policy and scrutiny of the procurement act to allow certain products to be procured by the government directly in order to cut out the middleman and cut costs.

The Central Procurement Board of Namibia was quoted in the media saying it didn't actually establish whether Amnics Trading, owned by Businessman Shapwa Kanyama actually had a condom or surgical gloves manufacturing factory before awarding the tender.

He says an investigation could reveal if there were any other tenders awarded dubiously or loopholes in the system that needed tightening.

Shikerete says the government has many areas of priority like the construction of sufficient classrooms where taxpayers' money must be spent.

Addressing a media conference at Rundu, Shikerete said SPYL, will monitor actions taken aimed at bringing the matter to a logical conclusion.
