The Oshikoto Regional Council, in its New Year's Message, has called on its inhabitants to start ploughing their fields and cultivating their land for food self-sufficiency.
The chairperson of the Oshikoto Regional Council, Samuel Shivute, urged residents of the region to make use of the current rain to plough.
The Oshikoto Regional Council has proven that members of the youth can serve in leadership positions by electing two young regional councillors.
Mateus Kamati, representing the Onayena Constituency, and Vilho Nuunyango, representing the Oniipa Constituency, will represent the region in the National Council and Management Committee, respectively.
The new members will serve for two and a half years, from June 1, 2023, to June 1, 2025.
The Oshikoto Regional Council has decided to use 60% of its income from 5% rates and taxes from local authorities, surcharges from sales of electricity, and value-added tax refunds on small-scale projects.
The Chief Regional Officer, Christella Mwenyo, says the money will be used on projects like the excavation of short water pipelines.
It will also be used in rural income-generating activities to boost rural economic growth and on other community projects.
The regional council estimates an income of about N$4.3 million.
