Namibia under-explored for its petroleum potential

The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) says there is huge potential for more hydrocarbon or petroleum discoveries to be made in Namibia, with both land and offshore areas underexplored.

This was revealed by NAMCOR experts during a technical session on Namibia's Regional Petroleum Potential at the Namibia International Energy Conference in Windhoek today 

During the session, the experts revealed that Namibia is home to four recognised offshore basins and two onshore basins, in which more than 30 exploration wells have been drilled to date. 

Lack of cleanup by diamond exploration companies in Skeleton Coast Park a concern

Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economics and Public Administration are concerned about equipment left behind by diamond exploration companies in the Skeleton Coast Park.

The committee visited a diamond exploration site at Mowe Bay in the Kunene Region.

Chief Diamond Inspector Patrick Elungu explained that two exploration licences were awarded to two Namibian companies for onshore and offshore activities.

Elungu added that the companies have so far not found viable diamond deposits.

Proper research needed before exploration and mining activities in Aminuis

The Chairperson of the Stampriet Acquifer Uranium Mining Association, Divan Opperman, has called on all relevant authorities to do proper research before taking any decision regarding the possible exploration and mining activities in the Aminuis Constituency.

Opperman made the call after a community engagement session at Leonardville.

Speaking to nbc News, Opperman stated that the Stampriet Aquifer is a source of water for many, and proper investigations are a must before any mining activity is carried out.
