Stock theft motion tabled in National Assembly

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) MP Vipuakuje Muharukua tabled a motion to address stock theft in communities and assess the effectiveness of current legislative measures.

Enforcement of drought relief programme should be discussed - Dr. Iijambo

Swanu of Namibia's Party President Dr. Tangeni Iijambo tabled a motion to discuss the enforcement of the drought relief programme by training specialists whose activities are related to the environment.

Dr. Iijambo stressed that laws and policies need to be put in place to mitigate drought effects on people's livelihoods.

PDM MP highlights critical need to reduce crime

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) MP, Mike Venaani, has introduced a motion aimed at urgently addressing the high crime rate in Namibia, emphasising the critical need to reduce crime and ensure the safety of the Namibian people.

Venaani's motion underscores the ongoing prevalence of various types of crimes in the country, particularly violent ones such as robbery, gender-based violence, rape, murder, and assault, as well as economic crimes.

He highlighted that there has been an increase in these crimes compared to the previous year.

Suicide, suicide attempts on the rise in Namibia

Health and Social Services Minister Dr. Kalumbi Shangula says his ministry is ready to extend its services to those in need, as suicide statistics over the past year paint a grim picture of depression in Namibia.

The number of deaths by suicide and suicide attempts is on the rise.

Of the 623 cases recorded over the past year, including teens and minors, 82% are male.

Dr. Shangula says the rising suicide rate can, to a large extent, be explained by untreated mental health conditions.

Tsumkwe Clinic receives e-bikes

The TB Free Namibia Foundation and the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) have donated e-bikes to the Tsumkwe Clinic. The bikes are intended to benefit the community of Tsumkwe and will be used in the prevention and management of drug-resistant TB.

During the World TB Day Commemoration in Tsumkwe in April this year, the TB Free Namibia Foundation, in collaboration with Dundee Precious Minerals, donated N$61,000 to the Ministry of Health and Social Services.This amount was used to procure two e-bikes for the drug-resistant TB programme in Tsumkwe.

Africa's transport sector urged to redouble intra-trade efforts

The South African Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, says Africa's transport sector needs to redouble its intra-trade efforts to optimise the Trans Kalahari Corridor.

She was speaking at the Trans-Kalahari Corridor ministerial council meeting in Windhoek.

Chikunga revealed that trading among African nations stands at less than 16% in comparison with trading between Africa and the European region, which is over 75%.
