Alliance formed to support Ally Angula for 2024 elections

An alliance of political parties and civic organisations has been launched in support of independent presidential candidate Ally Angula for the 2024 presidential elections.

Thus far, the alliance consists of four parties and civic organisations advocating for a government of national unity, and political parties with an interest have 14 days to apply to join the alliance. 

2024 is a significant year in the political landscape of Namibia, as Namibians will be going to the polls for the National Assembly and presidential election.

It was a solemn atmosphere at State House today as Cabinet ministers reacted to the passing of President Hage Geingob.

nbc Senior Producer Gordon Joseph spoke to Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and other Cabinet ministers at the swearing-in ceremony.

Nandi Ndaitwah said Geingob's legacy would be edged into the history of Namibia, describing his life as one dedicated to Namibia and its people.

Prof Katjavivi addresses 147th Inter-Parliamentary Union

 The Speaker of the National Assembly, Prof. Peter Katjavivi, addressed hundreds of Members of Parliament gathered at the 147th Inter-Parliamentary Union in Luanda, Angola. 

He stated that despite Namibia inheriting inequality from the policies of the apartheid regime, the country has adopted numerous initiatives to rectify this issue.

During a general debate under the theme "Parliamentary Action for Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions," Professor Katjavivi highlighted that Namibia has passed multiple legislations promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions. 

Justice Minister tables draft law on housing repossession

Justice Minister Yvonne Dausab tabled the High Court Amendment Bill and the Magistrate's Court Amendment Bill in the National Assembly, which will give equal rights to litigants in house or immovable property repossession cases.

The amendment to the High Court, she said, aims to address inadequate protection given to homeowners and to give sufficient discretionary power.

The other bill is to increase the jurisdiction of the magistrate's court to impose restrictions on the sale of immovable property.

PDM's bill to recognise Baster Traditional Authority rejected

In the National Assembly, MPs have voted against the Private Member's Bill on the recognition of the baster traditional authority by Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani.

The bill seeks to regulate the formal recognition of the Baster Traditional Authority within the country.

The objections made during the parliamentary session lacked detailed explanations, as the speaker cited in Rule 78 of the National Assembly's procedures.
