NSA updates various stakeholders in Omusati on upcoming census

The Namibia Statistic Agency (NSA) met various stakeholders in Omusati Region to update them on the upcoming 2023 Population and Housing census.  

The last Population and Housing Census conducted in Namibia was in 2011 and according to the Census Manager Isaak Neemu, this year's focus will be on Population and Housing.

Recruitment has already started and will end in June.

NSA advised those with permanent employment not to apply because they will not be considered.

Omusati Region residents harvest okatalashe

It's relish galore at Amarika and neighboring villages in the Omusati Region, as residents are currently harvesting the popular worms called Okatalashe, which live on thorn trees.

Some harvesters from faraway villages come to camp in various areas after traveling long distances daily in search of the worms, which are found on little thorn trees and shrubs in specific villages.

The annual occurrence provides an opportunity for locals to get free relish for their own consumption as well as to sell.

Hilde Kapitaholo Amunyela Shimweetheleni buried

President Hage Geingob has described Hilde Kapitaholo Amunyela Shimweetheleni, a veteran of the liberation struggle, as a fearless woman and unwavering revolutionary.

The late Shimwetheleni was buried at the Omungulu-gwombashe memorial site in the Omusati Region.

89-year-old Shimwetheleni was born in August 1933 at Oshipya village in the Oshana Region.

She was introduced to politics at the age of 32 by her late brother, Sackaria Daniel, who was a political activist together with the late Nathanael Maxwilili.

FPCA meet with SWAPO Party regional leadership

The regional leadership of the Former Plan Combatant Association (FPCA) which was formed to strengthen the SWAPO Party’s support base, to ensure it remains relevant and popular among its electorates as it was during the country’s liberation struggle, this morning met with SWAPO Party regional leadership headed by SWAPO’s Omusati Regional Coordinator, Sacky Kayone.

The aim of the meeting was to strengthen relations between the two bodies and mobilize resources as well as adopt strategies that will ensure victory for the party, in the 2024 National and Presidential elections.

Onawa Secondary School robbed of N$50,000

One of the top-performing schools in the Omusati Region, Onawa Secondary School, was robbed of N$50,000 in school hostel fees as well as voluntary contributions during the morning hours of Wednesday.

Yesterday, the school of excellence did not begin on a positive note.

Staff and learner morale was lower than expected when our news team visited the school.

It's alleged that robbers tied up an unarmed security guard on duty, gaining entry to the premises using an unknown object with which they broke the entrance doors of the school's administration building.

Crop farmers advised to use improved certified seeds for high yields

The Northern Namibia Farmers Seed Growers Cooperative, within the Omahanene Crop Research Station in the Omusati Region, is advising crop farmers to use improved certified seeds for high yields in a short period of time as opposed to traditional ones.

The cooperative was founded by 50 members 25 years ago in response to the need to supply farmers in the northern communal areas with high-quality seeds.

Since then, the cooperative's membership has grown to more than 200 seed growers, who provide farmers with high-quality seeds at a low cost.

Onesi and Tsandi residents in Omusati irked by delays in gravel road upgrade

Some frustrated residents of the Onesi and Tsandi constituencies in the Omusati Region have expressed dissatisfaction with the delay in the upgrading of Epalela-Onesi-Tsandi gravel road to bitumen standards.

The group held a demonstration and petitioned the Omusati Regional Governor, Erginus Endjala, saying road users are frustrated over the long overdue upgrading of the road.

Namwater completes construction of water canal in Omusati Region

Namwater has completed the construction of the water canal at a cost of N$93.5 million.

The construction of a 5.8-kilometer canal, which stretches from Omahenene to Olushandja in the Omusati Region, commenced in February last year.

The project is part of the reconstruction of the entire water canal, which measures about 150 kilometers from Omahenene to Oshakati in the Oshana Region.

Naiti Combined School in need of extra classrooms

The Naiti Combined School in Okalongo Circuit of the Omusati Region is in need of extra classrooms, an administration block, chairs and desks, as well as teacher houses and ablution facilities.

Speaking at the school's inaugural as its patron, Oshakati Mayor and Senior Hydrologist Leonard Hango said addressing children's educational needs is a shared responsibility, adding that sitting idle while waiting on the government to provide all educational amenities won't do Namibians much good.

UNFPA donates sanitary kits to Odeitotela Combined School learners

With the dignity of schoolgirls considered a key factor in school drop-outs, the United Nations Population Fund has donated sanitary kits to learners at Odeitotela Combined School in the Omusati Region.

The kits are part of a N$7.4 million grant by the Japanese government and are meant for eight regions.

The UNFPA officer in charge, Loide Amkongo, said the project "Leave No One Behind" targets the most vulnerable girls.
