They say young people's biggest battle is against unemployment, with many graduates still sitting at home.

Rural-Urban Migration Increases Poverty in Towns

Many Namibians are migrating from urban to rural areas in search of greener pastures, but the hope of finding employment is never possible.

nbc News reporter Stefan Uirab visited the town of Henties Bay, where many people are living below the poverty line.

Even in the heart of the town, shanty houses can be seen all around, some underbuilt with discarded materials, where the homeless live.

A third of the town's residents live in informal settlements with limited access to basic services such as water, electricity, and toilets.

Young entrepreneur calls on other youth to come up with businesses

A young entrepreneur from Gobabis has called on other unemployed youth to come up with businesses rather than waiting to be employed.

Sheirly Katuuo made this call when the nbc News team visited her chicken project in the town.
 
The 36-year-old Sheirly Katuuo says owning a chicken project is something she has been dreaming about, but it comes with effort and dedication.

Katuuo says she has been hustling to get employment since she graduated from the University of Namibia in Accounting and Auditing but to no avail.

Enhancement of SMEs in Namibia can tackle high unemployment rate- Ikela

Cooperation between China and Namibia to enhance small and medium enterprises in the country can be a gateway for economic growth and help tackle high unemployment rates.

This is the sentiment of Sakeus Ikela, a representative of Namibian youth at the 7th China-Africa Youth Festival currently underway in Beijing.

The week-long youth festival will see young African leaders from 49 African countries engage with officials from different industries.

They will also visit different sites and exchange views.

Councillor Mbangu calls for implementation of basic income grant for the unemployed

The Councillor of Rundu Rural Constituency in the Kavango East Region, Paulus Mbangu, has suggested that government implement a basic income grant that will cater to every unemployed Namibian and so combat poverty and unemployment in the country.

In his contribution to the national budget for 2023/24 in the National Council, Mbangu emphasized, that the grant would prove crucial to tackling pressing socio-economic issues.

China and Africa tackles economic challenges

Kunene Region records highest rate of youth unemployment

Kunene Region, one of the regions with the highest rate of youth unemployment and marginalized communities.

The introduction of the community radio station there was meant to alleviate some of these challenges; however, the targeted group is yet to fully embrace a tool many call "the voice of the poor."

Namibia tackles unemployment

The Namibian government is doing all it can to address unemployment, which has become a cause for concern.

The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen, says people are forced to live below the standard of dignity enjoyed by those who are gainfully employed.

Klazen made these remarks at the opening of the Men on the Side of the Road (MSR) office in Kuisebmund, Walvis Bay.

Klazen says the government is aware of many young people struggling to find jobs and thus finding themselves on the streets.

Task force set up to implement the recommendations made in 2021 APRM report

A task force has been established to implement the recommendations made in a report on youth unemployment in the country.  

In 2021, the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) published a report on Youth Unemployment in Namibia. 

The report studied the extent, nature and causes of youth unemployment in Namibia and provided recommendations for intervention by various stakeholders. 

A National Taskforce committee was then established to monitor the implementation of the report's recommendations and ensure intergovernmental coordination.
