Mining Commissioner requested to provide EPLs issued for lithium exploration

The Office of the Mining Commissioner has been requested to provide all Exclusive Prospecting Licences (EPLs) issued for lithium exploration in the Dâures constituency.

The Director of Mines in the Mines and Energy Ministry, Isabella Chirchir, and her team appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources after allegations of illegal mining undertaken by Xinfeng resurfaced.

Further allegations are that the ministry issued EPLs to established companies, among them Xinfeng, while such EPLs were already issued to smaller-scale farmers or individuals.

Apius !Auchab dismayed at traditional authorities

The United Democratic Front (UDF) President and MP, Apius !Auchab, is dismayed at traditional authorities in the Daures Constituency for failing to turn up for a consultative meeting this week regarding mining activities in the area.

In his disappointment, !Auchab is now suggesting that the government stop giving allowances to non-active traditional leaders.

Uis community alleges that Xinfeng and others mines, contravenes their mining license

Uis community members have alleged that a Chinese Mining company, Xinfeng, and several others are mining Lithium while their licenses were approved to mine semi-precious stones in the Daures Constituency of the Erongo Region. 

The Community Spokesperson Jimmy ||Araseb has requested the Mines and Energy Minister Tom Alweendo to revoke the mining licenses of all operators who are suspected of dodgy dealings.

Rain and strong wind blows off roofs of 12 houses at Okombahe

Rain accompanied by a strong wind has blown off the roofs of 12 houses at Okombahe in the Daures Constituency.

The storm also damaged several buildings and uprooted trees, including the famous Acacia, causing further damage to two cars.
 
Several electrical cables were pulled out, leaving the settlement without electricity for up to three hours.
 
A resident, Adolfine #Goses, narrates how she survived the storm while preparing a meal in the kitchen.
 
Her bedroom is left completely without a roof.

Omatjete Settlement complete renovations to local health centre

Donors and volunteers in the community of Omatjete settlement in the Erongo Region have completed renovations of a health center.

Dr Kalumbi Shangula, Minister of Health and Social Services, has praised the community's charitable spirit as it improves service delivery.

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the community of Omatjete realized the need to strengthen public health care as the clinic was overloaded.

Traditional leaders and the Omatjete Initiative Committee mobilized community members and relatives from abroad to donate money and their services.

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has urged farmers at Otjimboyo Conservancy in Erongo's Dâures Constituency to diversify production systems and adapt to climate change.

Pohamba Shifeta made this call during the handing over ceremony of a garden project there.
 
The Otjimboyo Conservancy is located at the foot of the Brandberg mountain, approximately 40 kilometres north of Uis in the Erongo Region.
