The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economics and Public Administration called on fishing companies to sell fish at an affordable price in order for Namibians to enjoy their natural resources.

Natangwe Ithete made this call during the two-day consultative and oversight workshop on the Financial Institutions and Markets Act, held in Swakopmund.

Fishing is one of Namibia's leading industries, consistently contributing around three percent to the country's GDP since 2007 and accounting for about 20% of export earnings.

Delivering affordable housing remains a key government agenda item.

As such, the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, says his ministry avails millions of dollars towards the construction of houses to improve the living standards of Namibians.

Uutoni said this when he handed over more than 40 new houses, constructed at a cost of N$11 million at Otjiwarongo.

These houses were constructed by the National Housing Enterprises after the Otjiwarongo Municipality made available land in 2021 to set up affordable units.

The Otjozondjupa Regional Governor has called on the Otavi Town Council to make land available and affordable to the residents through the accelerated land delivery programme.

James Ureikua says municipalities often miss the point by converting land into income-generating projects, making the land unaffordable to the majority.

Uerikua assured the Council of his support but wants to see cleanliness in and around town.

Uerikua says it is high time that the business community of Otavi contributes to the development of the town.
