Emergency and Medical Regional Response Center launched at Mariental

The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, in partnership with the Mariental Town Council, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, and the Namibian Police, has launched an Emergency and Medical Regional Response Center at Mariental.

The emergency rescue center, to operate from the Mariental Fire Station and serve the Hardap Region, will provide emergency medical care and stabilize injured accident victims.

Breast and Prostate Cancer Research Project launched

Namibia has launched the Breast and Prostate Cancer Research Project in collaboration with the African Caribbean Cancer Consortium.

The project aims at promoting health and early detection as well as identifying factors that contribute to breast and prostate cancer.

The project will be carried out by different countries in the private and public sectors to encourage a healthy society.

The research will explore effective means to prevent, capture data, diagnose, and treat breast and prostate cancer.

TB a major challenge in Tsumkwe

Tuberculosis (TB) infection remains a major health challenge in Tsumkwe.

The health facilities in the area continue to record a higher number of new infections, with the Drug Resistant TB strain being the highest compared to elsewhere in the country.  


To resolve the situation, the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has deployed groups of health workers who move from village to village to create awareness about TB. 

The healthcare workers also collect sputum samples from community members who are coughing, for diagnosis.  

Katutura Health Centre's to operate for 24 hours

It was good news to the ears of the residents of Katutura in Windhoek when the Ministry of Health and Social Services announced the extension of the Katutura Health Centre's operating hours to 24 hours a day.

Residents had high expectations, and while service seemed to have improved, weekends remained a challenge as unattended patients queue up for hours.

Situated at the busy intersection of Independence Avenue and Clemence Kapuuo near the mall known as Black Chain, the Health Centre has been operating on a 24-hour basis since 2019.

Namibia National Children's Hearts Trust launched

Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Fenny Shidhika and partners have launched the Namibia National Children's Hearts Trust.

This is a breakthrough for the country, as many children and adults with heart diseases have often been referred to Cape Town for attention and treatment. 

The Trust will provide affordable health care, create awareness about the disease, and will perform between 150 and 200 transcatheter and surgical procedures per annum.

Namibians urged to be on high alert on Marburg Viral Disease

The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) says Namibia needs to be vigilant and on high alert, on Marburg Viral Disease particularly at the main border crossings and at public and private facilities.  

The country has not detected any case of Marburg viral disease to date.  

However, due to increased activity related to international travel and trade, population displacement and migration, the country remains at risk of importation of Marburg Viral Disease.

The public is urged to remain calm while the ministry is activating its preparedness activities.

Etayi Constituency gets Primary Health Care Clinic

The Health and Social Services Minister Dr. Kalumbi Shangula opened the Oikokola Primary Health Care Clinic in Etayi Constituency in the Omusati Region. 

The clinic construction was funded by the government at the cost of N$ 17.9 million.

On Monday,  Dr. Shangula opened another primary health care clinic at Iipanda Yamiti in Oshikuku district.

Oikokola clinic which was opened on Wednesday in the same district is equipped with a pharmacy, five consulting rooms, delivery, and treatment rooms as well as rapid test and counseling rooms among others.

Dr. Kalumbi Shangula inaugurates Oikokola Primary Healthcare Clinic

Health and Social Services Minister Dr. Kalumbi Shangula officially opened the Oikokola Primary Healthcare Clinic in Etayi constituency in Omusati Region.

The clinic's construction was funded by the government at a cost of N$17.9 million.

On Monday, Dr. Shangula opened another primary health care clinic at Iipanda Yamiti in Oshikuku district.

He says primary health care is the foundation for a stronger health system.

Lack of data and research on TB infections in the mining sector causes concern

There is a need to improve data and research on TB infections in the mining sector in the SADC region, which is said to be a serious concern.

These were among the remarks made by stakeholders at a workshop on the first operationalization plan for the SADC Heads of State and Government Declaration on TB in the mining sector.

In 2017, estimated figures indicate that over one thousand TB cases were recorded within Namibia's mining sector, while Botswana recorded the least infections.

The SADC Region accounts for 70% of tuberculosis cases on the continent.

Many Namibians travel long distances to access healthcare facilities

Access to healthcare remains a challenge, with many Namibians forced to travel long distances to reach the nearest medical center.

It is against this background that Dynapharm is on a mission to bring medical services closer to those living in rural areas.

The Dynapharm team kicked off its journey with a visit to the Okakarara auction, where farmers gathered.

Farmers, especially the elderly, gathered at the mobile check-up point to get their health tested through a machine that detects trouble just by scanning one's hand.
