UNAM rubbished allegations that students at the School of Medicine were admitted along tribal lines

The University of Namibia has dismissed allegations that students at the School of Medicine were admitted along tribal lines.

Though not verified by the institution, UNAM says only 41 of the 70 successful applicants indicated on their application forms that they were Oshiwambo-speaking.

It is a sensitive matter to talk about, but tribal allegations cloud the institution's School of Medicine and School of Surgery programs after the vast majority of those on the acceptance list at the school carry Aawambo names.

MAWLR Minister Schlettwein assesses flood situation in Omusati

The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein visited the Omusati Region to assess the flood situation in the Outapi Constituency, as a result of waters from Angola.

At the meeting with Governor Erginus Endjala and the Regional Disaster Risk Management team, Schlettwein urged people not to panic as the flood is not a disaster.

Endjala on his part warned Traditional Authority not to allocate plots to people in flood-prone areas, saying those areas are supposed to be for animal grazing.

Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, and Omusati Regions Show a Decline in Crime Over Christmas

The Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, and Omusati regions have recorded a decline in crime-related incidents during the Christmas period.

However, those topping the chart are rape and suicide.

Two rape cases were recorded at Ohangwena on Christmas Eve.

It is alleged that a 56-year-old woman who was returning home from cuca shops at around eleven o'clock in the night was raped by two youths, ages 20 and 22. 

One allegedly held her down while the other one raped her. The duo left behind evidence that led to their identification and subsequent arrest.

National Assembly considers early recess given opposition MPs' continued boycott

The absence of opposition party parliamentarians in the National Assembly has resulted in a short session this afternoon - with some MPs suggesting that the house goes on recess right away.
During the last two weeks, the National Assembly was marred by negative pictures of opposition party members unceremoniously walking out and staging a complete boycott.
In today' sitting, some opposition members could be seen in the house, some all smile and others very serious. 

They appeared briefly in the house before again disappearing.

Two minor children burn to death in traditional hut at Omusati's Otjimanangombe village

Two minor children, who are siblings aged 3 and 4, were burned beyond recognition in the early hours of this morning while they were sleeping in their traditional hut at Otjimanangombe village in Ruacana Constituency, Omusati Region.

It is alleged that, at the time of the incident, four children were asleep in the traditional hut, which caught fire and burned to ashes.
