NamRA concern over fishing sector tax contribution

The Nambia Revenue Agency (NamRA) has expressed concern over the minimal contribution of the fishing sector in taxes.

Its Board members and Executive Management paid a courtesy call on President Hage Geingob at State House.

The fishing sector is one of Namibia's key contributors to the Gross Domestic Product, yet its contribution to the taxman is one of the lowest.

As of March this year, NamRA had collected about N$57 billion in taxes, and the sector accounts for only about 2%.

Namibia Revenue Agency's (NamRA) Commissioner, Sam Shivute says tax morality and the compliance rate among Namibians are very low.

Shivute, together with other NamRA officials, visited Otjiwarongo to engage stakeholders on tax, customs, and excise matters in the Otjozondjupa Region.  

Compliance with tax laws is crucial for the state to function and support government programs and services toward improving citizens' lives.

The Commissioner of the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA), Sam Shivute, has called on taxpayers to voluntarily comply with the tax laws as well as customs and excise services for the country to achieve sustainable economic growth.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement session at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region, Shivute says NamRA has noted with concern some individuals and several businesses failing and refusing to comply with the tax laws and regulations.

Such practice, he says, is illegal as per the customs and excise act.
