Vast hectares of land destroyed by veldfires a concern

Since the start of the fire season in April, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has recorded a total of 499,344 hectares destroyed by uncontrolled fires.

The public is called upon to take precautions when handling fires.

Fires have caused massive damage to the environment and properties over the past few years.

The public, farmers, and property owners need to put measures in place to minimise the risks of veld fires.

Over 160 000 hectares of grazing land in ||Kharas Mountain areas destroyed by veld fires

Recent veld fires in the ||Kharas Mountain areas have destroyed an estimated 160 thousand hectares of grazing land, spread over 19 farms.

This was revealed in an assessment of damages report compiled by the ||Kharas Regional Council.

The report states the veld fires erupted on the 12th of October at Farm Selderus or Garis in the Keetmanshoop District, causing destruction for five days before they were contained.

Affected farmers, the reports state, had to relocate their livestock to grazing areas offered to them.
