Breaking bad habits takes time and effort, but mostly perseverance.
These were the sentiments shared by various speakers at the "We Are Not Gonna Do That" motivational event, which took place in Windhoek under the theme "Breaking Bad Habits".
Breaking bad habits means making changes, and this involves strong emotions, even when change is intended for the better.
The 'We Are Not Gonna Do That' motivational event is an initiative by nbc's Sports News Anchor and Production Officer, 33-year-old Jessica Kaimu.
The idea emanated from a blunder she made during a live television news production about three years ago.
"I didn't even know we were live, and the positive feedback that I got from people was because it was during the time of COVID-19 in June, when people lost their loved ones, and how I was able to kind of mellow down everything. During that period and also knowing that there are people who are going through so much and bad habits are usually the sum total of our lives and these are the things that hold us back, I thought, Why not use this very same platform, 'Jessica, we're live', which is a brand now, to encourage people and use it as a source of motivation?"
She says this marks the first event with more to come, and her mission is to motivate people to overcome shame.
"Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you respond to it. I made a mistake on air; I didn't know we were live, and it was a whole blunder. It was an embarrassment, so instead of me shying away and letting it overpower me, I am now using this platform as a source of motivation. Look, whatever you are going through in life, it is not that bad; it is life calling you to step up and do something about it."
