Cardiff University has awarded the Speaker of the National Assembly, Professor Peter Katjavivi, an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his remarkable contributions to politics, education, and society.

Each year, Cardiff University confers special honours on a select few individuals whose significant achievements and contributions have made an impact on society.

Professor Katjavivi, it says, devoted his life to the cause of social justice, from building international support for Namibia's liberation struggle to transforming a previously segregated academic institution into a national university accessible to all Namibians.

His tireless efforts made an indelible impact, it says.

Among others, the National Assembly Speaker served as Ambassador in Belgium and Germany, Director General of the National Planning Commission, Member of Parliament, and now Speaker of the National Assembly.

He is also the Vice President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Task Force on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

His passion for fostering societal welfare is evident through his active participation on the boards of various national, regional, and international bodies, particularly in the education and development spheres.

Accepting the award, Prof. Katjavivi shed light on the solid partnership between the University of Namibia and Cardiff University, which began in the 1990s.

This collaboration has led to crucial academic programmes and research efforts between Namibia and the United Kingdom.

Prof. Katjavivi emphasised the necessity of strengthening ties between the Welsh Parliament and the Namibian Parliament, especially in the area of climate change.
