The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has announced that flights to Luderitz Airport resumed on Friday.

Fly Namibia on Thursday cancelled its scheduled flights to and from the airport due to safety issues caused by unforeseen mechanical problems with the firefighting vehicle operated by the NAC.

The spokesperson of NAC, Dan Kamati, said in a media statement that a Notice to Airmen was issued on the availability of airport rescue and firefighting services, and NAC activated plans to resume operations as soon as possible.

NAC apologised to all affected parties for the flight cancellation, which necessitated prioritising "safety first.".

The airports company said operations resumed, which encompasses operations for both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, thanks to collaborations with various stakeholders.

Announcing the flight cancellation on Thursday, Fly Namibia stressed that safety remains its utmost priority and that it is committed to adhering to all safety regulations and guidelines set by the relevant authorities.

According to aviation regulations, it is important that airports have a functioning firefighting vehicle to ensure the safety of passengers and crew in case of emergencies.

Equally, the airline apologised for any inconvenience the flight cancellation may have caused while stating that it understands the importance of reliable air travel services.
