The ||Kharas Education Directorate is set to re-introduce extra classes during holidays for Grade 11 and Grade 12 AS level learners to improve their performance.
Ryan Assegaai, Inspector for the Kalahari Circuit, revealed this in an interview with nbc News.
Assegaai says the decision to reintroduce the extra classes was agreed on during a three-day principals meeting that ended on Friday.
The principals gathering analysed Grade 4 to AS level learner performance for the 2023 academic year.
"We came to the end of our three-day principals gathering for ||kharas today, and today we divided the principals into the different circuits. In the three circuits, they discussed with the different inspectors or respective inspectors action plans on what we are going to implement for us to improve our results, so the first recommendation that was made was that we will bring back our holiday schools that were a huge success in the past."
The principals, says Assegaai, agreed that Grade 11 and AS level learners be provided with copies of their subject syllabus.
"We have realised that it came from the principals, the interpretation of the subject syllabi is sometimes a problem. Now, this can be various, as can be mentioned here. For example, proper induction is not given to our newly appointed teachers; sometimes, when teachers are coming from colleges or universities, they don't know how to interpret the syllabus. Therefore, we decided that learners in Grades A and B will get copies of the syllabi for them to see what they are supposed to master in that specific year."
Other contemplated interventions are proper induction of beginner teachers, proper monitoring of lesson plans, continuous assessment of learners, and the compilation of quality question papers.
"We need good induction programmes at the school. Teachers will normally come to the school, but they will not be inducted on things such as dress code. Teachers will come to the school not properly dressed, and we emphasise it again that the principals must look into it so that we get back that respect of our teachers by being properly dressed. That is the first e. Also, on how to prepare quality lessons."
Assegaai also urges parents to get involved in their children's education.
