Sports journalist Carlos Kambaekwa highlights that President Hage Geingob was more than just a politician and diplomat; he was also a passionate sports enthusiast.

Kambaekwa reveals that President Geingob, who served as Namibia's third President, had an enduring passion for football.

Not only did the President keenly support the Tsumeb-based team, initially known as Etosha Lions and later renamed Chief Santos, as well as the Brave Warriors, but he also actively participated in the game himself.

Starting his football journey as a skilled defender for Etosha Lions, President Geingob's love for the sport was evident.

It was a rare sight not to see him in attendance at Brave Warriors matches, and he even conveyed a message to the team during the recent AFCON tournament.

Throughout his presidency, President Geingob made it a point to attend numerous sporting events, both in his personal capacity and as an official representative.

Kambaekwa, who shared a personal friendship with the President in the realm of sports, deeply mourns his passing.

In fact, he had been working on a book chronicling the history of local sports, which was set to be launched by President Geingob.

As a Patron of the Namibia Football Association (NFA), the Dr. Hage Geingob Cup was established to pay tribute to him through the sport of football.
