US Ambassador to Namibia, Randy Berry, says President Joe Biden's visit to Angola is strategic for SADC, particularly its infrastructure development agenda.
Biden was on a three-day visit to Angola, where he toured the Lobito Corridor, a railway line that stretches from Zambia to the Port of Lobito.
The 1,300-kilometer corridor is one of the transport infrastructure projects funded by the US.
A significant aspect of the visit to Luanda was to discuss how the United States can collaborate with regional countries, including Angola, to promote integrated economic development.
Berry added that this includes a commitment to the Lobito Corridor project and efforts to enhance infrastructure in Southern Africa. The understanding is that improved economic conditions will foster better trading relationships, benefiting not only the US but also creating more opportunities for Namibians, Angolans, and others in the region.
Such initiatives, Berry said, are seen as beneficial for all involved, contributing positively to regional economies. The visit has been described as highly constructive, reflecting a growing relationship with Angola and the broader region.
"I wish the President had been on the continent a little earlier in his tenure, but I am glad he has shown this commitment by making this trip."
