Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF Party intends to table a motion in Parliament to extend the term of the country's President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, a Zimbabwean lawmaker has confirmed to nbc News.
Zanu PF’s Bikita West Member of Parliament, Energy Mutodi, confirmed the proposed motion on presidential, parliamentary, and local government term limits, saying it was “untimely leaked to the media.”
The draft document states that opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) member of Parliament, Charles Moyo, seconded the motion, but Moyo has since distanced himself from it, saying, "I never signed any document" in a statement.
Mutodi is asking that Mnangagwa's term be extended for five years or for a period deemed appropriate by MPs.
The Zanu-PF patron was quoted by local Zimbabwean media as saying, "While we confirm the authenticity of the proposed draft motion, we want to reiterate that until signed by its proponents and approved by the Honourable Speaker of Parliament Advocate JFN Mudenda, it remains a draft and work in progress."
The draft motion says that the extension of Mnangagwa's term is necessitated by the will of the Zimbabwean people.
