India has donated a thousand tonnes of rice and maize to Namibia's Drought Relief efforts.

This was announced by the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Jenelly Matundu during a reception in Windhoek, marking the 76th Republic Day of India.

The day is a celebration of the adoption of the Constitution of India and the country's transition to a republic, which came into effect on 26 January 1950.

The donation, which already arrived in Namibia, is part of India's commitment to support Namibia and address food security concerns in the country.

"Namibia considers India as a strategic bilateral partner, owing to the key role India played before and after our independence. Both sides have shown significant commitment to expanding cooperation in various areas. We are further extremely grateful that, the Government of the Republic of India has donated 1000 tons of Rice, and 1000 tons of Maize."

At the reception, the newly accredited High Commissioner of India to Namibia, Rahul Shrivastava, was also welcomed.

"Notably, India's exports to Namibia increased by 88%, amounting to a billion US dollars. India has contributed to Namibia's developmental journey, and our bilateral developmental plans continue to flourish. Last year we extended scholarship opportunities across diverse fields to Namibian professionals; others benefitted from training institutions."

Namibia and India have resolved to strengthen their commitment in various areas of cooperation and bilateral relations.

In 2022, eight cheetahs were translocated from Namibia to the Asian country, and four cheetah cubs were born there at the end of March 2023.
