Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, inaugurated the new Impalila floating dock jetty on Tuesday in the Kabbe South Constituency of the Zambezi Region. The project underscores the government’s commitment to community development and regional connectivity.

During the commissioning ceremony, Mutorwa highlighted the importance of infrastructure, noting that the jetty is not only for Namibia but also for neighboring countries like Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. He described the jetty as a symbol of the government’s dedication to enhancing connectivity, fostering economic growth, and promoting tourism in the Zambezi Region and the broader SADC area.

“This jetty is not merely a structure; it represents our government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and unity where the four countries come together,” Mutorwa said. He emphasized that the floating dock will serve as a vital link between Impalila Island and the mainland, facilitating the movement of goods, services, and visitors. “This place will soon be bustling with activity, with ferries and fishing boats creating a vibrant hub of commerce, culture, and tradition,” he added.

Mutorwa also called for regional leadership to plan for the island’s future, suggesting the establishment of a settlement, village council, and eventually a town. He noted that Impalila’s rapid development is long overdue, given its strategic location. “Impalila connects four countries not only geographically but also culturally and linguistically,” he said.

Zambezi Governor Alufea Sampofu praised the residents of Impalila for their willingness to support development by making land available for government projects. He stressed the importance of collaboration with neighboring Botswana to boost tourism and economic activity in the region. “It is very necessary that we work together closely with our neighbors to tap into more tourism opportunities,” Sampofu said.

The docking jetty is fully funded by the government at a cost of N$ 2.9 million.
