The Namibia National Students' Organization (NANSO) officially opened its General Students Council meeting under the theme: "Reigniting Radical Purpose and Student Solidarity: A Call to Action for Student Leadership."

The event, attended by student representatives from all 14 regions, celebrated the ongoing fight for student rights and welfare.

Former NANSO leader Dr. Elijah Ngurare, the keynote speaker, reflected on the legacy of Namibia's founding president, Dr. Sam Nujoma, stating that his generation's liberation mission continues to inspire student activism.

"Reigniting Radical Purpose recalls the liberation mission of Dr. Nujoma's generation. Their radical goal was equality, equity, justice, and inclusivity. As Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, once said: 'Seek ye first the political kingdom, and all else shall be added unto you.' While we have enjoyed 34 years of political independence, our focus must now shift to economic emancipation. Under our first female president, H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, we must consolidate radical resource beneficiation that benefits all Namibians," Ngurare said.

Attendees acknowledged rising enrolment rates in higher education institutions, noting that while this reflects progress, it also increases demand for educational resources and support.

A key highlight was the policy change allowing failing students to apply for financial assistance from the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF). This move is expected to improve access to education, reduce barriers, and encourage resilience among struggling students.

NANSO President Dorothea Nangolo called for the introduction of an education levy, stressing that no student should be denied education due to financial constraints.

"We have witnessed too many students forced out of institutions due to financial hardships, too many learners unable to continue their schooling due to systemic inequalities. The time has come to demand concrete solutions. Education is not a privilege; it is a right," Nangolo said.

Despite challenges, NANSO reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that ease student burdens and improve their experiences.
