Heavy rainfall in the Khomas Region has severely damaged road infrastructure, limiting motorists' access to their destinations. Some roads are closed due to the rains and independence celebrations.
The Windhoek-Rehoboth road is closed at the bridge near the Aris Weighbridge after heavy currents caused significant damage. Large cracks on the road surface pose a safety risk, forcing many motorists to turn back.
No alternative route is available for Rehoboth-Windhoek traffic. Some drivers are leaving their vehicles and crossing the bridge on foot, meeting relatives or friends on the other side. Warning signs have been placed to alert motorists of the danger.
The Roads Authority urges drivers to exercise caution and follow temporary safety measures. A bypass will be constructed by an appointed contractor to ensure safer travel.
A section of the B1 road from Osona Village to the interchange is also closed as a precaution. Motorists are advised to use the freeway as an alternative.
The City of Windhoek has warned against crossing flooded rivers, as several cars have been stuck or swept away by strong currents.
